Preliminary Task Evaluation: For my preliminary task me and my group did a comedy sketch where an exchange took place between 3 people. The exchange was supposed to be a case full of money which was for going to pay for the gym membership. The pair who handed over the membership soon realised that there was no money in the case and proceeded to chase the other individual. The individual then escaped the pair and gave the membership to his boss who was pleased with him. In the video me, Daniel and Lewis were the actors whilst Lily was the camera woman. The camera that we used was a DSLR and the only other piece of equipment that we used was a tripod. Lastly, within the sequence we had to include the following things:- Match on action - Shot reverse shot - 180 degree rule - Rule of thirds framing Match on Action: The scene starts with my own character walking through a door, we used a match on action to make the scene seem realistic and as if the three shots happened at the same time with different cameras. When in reality is was the same camera with 3 different shots but editing was used to make it seem real. Match on action was key in this sequence as it significantly helps the continuity of the scene which makes it more convincing. Overall, i feel as though me and my group did this well as the editing was very good however, it could obviously improve. Shot Reverse Shot: The scene then moves on to a conversation between characters and a shot reverse shot technique is used within this sequence. Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character predominantly not on screen, and then the other character is shown looking back at the original character. This technique provides for the audience to see that the conversation is taking place. 180 degree rule: The 180 degree rule ties in with the shot reverse shot technique that is also used in our sequence. This is because during the conversation we do not break the 180 degree rule by keeping the camera on one side of the actors. This is key as if we did cross the line and consequently break the rule then the audience may not understand what is happening and make think that it is a completely different scene. Rule of Thirds: The rule of thirds is a very crucial part of the preliminary task. The characters within the scene stand in the centre of the frame to show that they are the main feature of the shot. In my sequence we used the rule of thirds during the exchange, this is shown as the two objects that are being passed between the characters are predominantly in the middle thirds as they are the centre of the attention. Furthermore, later on in the sequence when i give the box with gym membership in to Lewis the object in the middle of the table is the centre of attention along with Lewis' character as he is now the attention. This is whilst my character is in the left third as they are not needed anymore as my role is over. Feedback:
The feedback i got from my teacher and peers is that my preliminary task was funny/comedic. However, i was also told that some of the shots should be cut shorter as there is no one in the frame of the shots so it is not needed. This is relevant at the start of the sequence and when the characters are running. Also, we was told that the handheld shot was a bit shaky so we should always use a tripod when doing this. Lastly, there was a smudge on the camera for one of the final shots when my character enters the room. In the future we would have to re shoot that shot as it lowers the quality of the video.
